Basildon, is a town situated within the English county Essex. It is the largest town, within its Borough (Basildon Borough). Like Harlow, Basildon was a new town, created to deal with the overspill of people, having to be rehomed after the bombings of world war two. To create this, there was a conglomeration of four villages to create on Town – Basildon (the most central), Pitsea, Laindon and Vange. This happened in 1948. Basildon received its Borough status, in 2010.
The town has a very large shopping centre, offering multiple shops, restaurants and coffee houses. At one point, when the shopping centre opened in 1985, it was named the biggest covered shopping centre, but has since lost that title. The shopping centre is constantly adapting to modern day life and has had many renovations since its opening, to ensure it keeps bringing in visitors.
Basildon is home to the festival leisure park, also known as “Bas Vegas”. Situated inside there are – 15 restaurants, a bowling alley and arcade centre, two hotels, a family entertainment centre (including a play frame), dodgems, two health clubs and a nightclub! The Leisure park has something for everyone. The name “Bas Vegas” came from proposals that the site would be turned into a casino, which was overlooked, but the name stuck. In 2012 a wakeboarding complex was opened.
Many of Basildon’s residents commute to work in London, with just a 38-minute train journey, leaving from any of their three train stations, they could arrive within London Fenchurch Train station. Basildon also has good links to London via road.
