Southend-On-Sea, or more commonly known as just Southend, is a seaside town situated within Essex. Southend depended heavily on tourism to improve its economy and infrastructure. Now, in the summer months it is always bustling with people enjoying the attractions that the town has to offer.
From 1986 right up until 2012, the seaside town hosted a seafront air show each year for the public to enjoy. This event was always popular, and offered a free day out that accommodated to everyone. This was one of the biggest, free seafront airshows in Europe and always attracted people from all walks of life. A huge variety of planes could be seen here including Concorde, the RAF Red Arrows and The RAF Falcons were commonly known to showcase a parachute display.
The Seaside Town has its own theme park, that is suited to all ages, with rides for children and then bigger rides for the thrill seekers. In the summer months, the theme park is always crammed with crowds of people. Southend has its own pier and measures to 1.34 meters long. They have a train that runs from one end to the other, taking you out into the ocean to enjoy to view and ocean air. At the end of the train journey, once you have returned, there is a small museum and gift shop to educate yourself with the history of the pier. Along the seafront, there are many amusement arcades, fish and chip shops and stalls selling typical seafront food like donuts and ice cream.
Transport links have not always been great in Southend, but in recent years they have improved massively. The town has its own train station, which comes in at the centre. In recent years, it has become much easier to travel to London either via train, or the many coach services that run at a reasonable price. Southend has its own airport and offers many short haul flights.
